On the right-hand side of TBP, Geis depicts Transcription Factor II B (TFIIB) in purple, attached to the other components of the preinitiation complex. Geis positions and colors the purple protein farther back in the painting, depicting its collateral position.

TFIIB is a general transcription factor that joins to form a TBP(TFIID)•TFIIB•DNA complex. After this complex is created, it can then be recognized by a complex of RNA Polymerase II and TFIIF.
